"I’m a Midwest native, raised with strict
standards but also allowed the freedom to
explore fields and woods around me. I
carry that play between tight boundaries
and freedom to my watercolor paintings.
So I limit my palette to a few colors and
push the rules in layering more washes of
color than are “possible.” I position solid
structures amid wild plantings and I play
orderly fields against a raging storm.
This play of rules against freedom is
actually just a piece of the larger drama of
opposites pulling us one way or the other.
This is what I see happening in the skies
above – opposites battling it out. This is
what I work to show in my skyscapes –
extremes of human nature expressed in
“sky form.” And more. We can’t live
with constant battles; in the end we
achieve a balance. This, too, is what my
paintings ultimately show – nature, skies,
the world in harmony."
