"Ever since I tried on a kimono at age 6, I
have been fascinated with Asian art and
textiles. I have been working with kimono
fabric for a year, making scarves using
fabric from vintage silk kimonos (mostly
from the 1960's-1980's). Deciding on the
combination of fabrics is the most
enjoyable part of the process. I buy the
whole kimonos which I take apart, or buy
the fabric that someone else has taken
apart, or buy bolts of fabric. I purchase
most of the material from Japan through
online internet stores.
I’ve worked in many other areas of
design, including book art, photography,
jewelry making and graphic design. My
formal education was in art and design at
the University of Michigan and
Metropolitan State College in Denver .
I've also taken workshops and classes
from a number of other schools, including
Cornish College of Art and Oregon College
of Arts and Crafts. I think I’ve been
playing with design my entire life, in one
way or another. I am happy to have found
an accessible form of expression with the
kimono scarves."
