"Being a Seattle native, Northwest landscapes strongly
influence my paintings. I became fascinated with landscapes
in Eastern Washington while spending many summers and
autumns working in fruit orchards along the Yakima and
Columbia Rivers. Living out of the back of a pickup truck, I
spent much of my free time sketching the countryside.
Orchard work was hard, satisfying, and sensual, and those
early sketches inspired many of my recent paintings and
pastels. Other paintings are based on city views not far from
my Seattle home or derive from rural and wilderness areas,
primarily in the Northwest. Whether in natural form or
refined to meet the structural needs of society, the vitality of
elements play an integral part in these compositions."
