"I have walked many beaches but have never
seen anything quite like what I first saw in
February 2005 on a beach in the province of
Guanacaste in Costa Rica.  Passing walkers
must have thought I was crazy as I stood over
the natural art that only I seem to see.  I
stooped, k
neeled and walked back and forth
in amazement.  There were images only
created by the retreating waters and others by
the creatures that lived immediately below.
While I captured the images that to me were
majestic and moving it was a more
imaginative friend pointed out things that I did
not see.  There was a monkey, a raccoon, a
snake, a lion’s head, even the profile of
Abraham Lincoln that the random movements
of sea creatures had created.  In one, the
animals actually spelled out the word “tico”
the nickname for a Costa Rican.

The sand images are created by natural
elements; low or receding tide, an early
morning sun at the right angle to better define
the depth and color of the image, a rock or
volcanic base to a beach that allows retreating
water to etch or erode the sand and an eye for
the unusual."
